Will the alteration be visible on the finished dress?
It should not be. A hem is finished with the original edge treatment where possible, seams are pressed properly, and any beading disturbed by the work is re-sewn by hand. The test is whether someone can tell the dress was altered by looking at it — on a job done properly, they cannot.
